Description
Dive into the world of hand building with celebrated potter, Sunshine Cobb. Engaging demonstrations will motivate you to experiment with new and old forms and construction methods. This workshop is geared toward creative expansion and encourages students who attempt to use these new and old hand building techniques to embrace a process-over-product mentality. Sunshine's teaching will focus on ways this approach resonates with beginning students just discovering clay as well as advanced professionals who have worked with clay for years.
While the foundation of Sunshine’s work is rooted in historical ceramics traditions, she is an entirely modern potter showcasing contemporary themes in her work. In this workshop, we will discuss how to find inspiration, the ways in which abstract concepts have made their way into Sunshine's work, and how to foster similar insertion into your own creative practice. We'll explore the boundaries we tend to impose as artists and how opening them illuminates endless possibilities.
Throughout the week, Sunshine will provide demonstrations including coil building methods, using templates to create components and build a variety of forms, soft slab construction, and several reductive decorative and form building techniques. In addition, they will speak to the building surface through the making process and discuss their work's glaze and surface treatment.
Students can expect hands on time in the studio to practice what they've learned and create their own hand built works. All materials and necessary tools will be provided, although students are welcome to bring in their own personal tools if they would like. All skill levels are welcome.
NOTE: This workshop has a 45 day cancellation policy. Tuition assistance cannot be applied for this class fee.
