This three-week workshop is an opportunity for students to choose their own adventure. Participants can spend time honing their hand building skills with function as the focus, and/or begin to develop content for their work. Either route is celebrated and challenging. This dynamic studio environment gives students access to new ways of thinking about their work.
Media & Techniques:
Using mid-range earthenware clay fired in oxidation, students engage in discussions and demonstrations of surface treatments and various hand building methods. The workshop includes demonstrations using soft and hard slabs, as well as coil building applications. Multiple glazing and surface treatments are discussed and developed for the class. Writing and research assignments are offered for those interested in content development.
The daily activities include demonstrations, work sessions, one-on-one mentoring and group discussions. Each week students set individual goals that focus on content or skill development. Journal work is encouraged for content development, inspirational research and exploration.
